Soaring Winwood and Clapton
Playing together, these fellas were made to be. The excellent selection of songs from the repertoire of each, and the ways they adorned each others songs and provided harmonies was striking. However, it is to someone's great credit, perhaps Clapton's, to realize that they indeed had unfinished business. For instance, I would not have thought an extended guitar solo on Winwood's "Glad" would be particularly workable. This combination though, was enough to coax me out of my chair.
There was perhaps no greater moment musically than Winwood and Clapton soloing together on "Had to Cry Today," a joyous cacophony of guitars. I had not seen Winwood live before. Backup musicians and singers were all of the quality one would expect from a show of this order. I've always enjoyed his singing on record. But in person his voice absolutely towers above the mix, soaring with Clapton鈥檚 guitar. Interesting they chose to play Jimi Hendrix' "Voodoo Chile" (NOT Voodoo Chile Slight Return !!). But in comparison to Hendrix' original, Clapton's guitar was oddly lacking !! Clapton is probably the only guitarist anywhere that could even consider attempting this song.
It was a great show. I saw Cream in Baltimore on their farewell tour over 40 years ago, but hadn't seen Clapton since. After seeing the set list for the final show of the tour, I wished I had. Would that John Crist and Steve had been playing together "all these years." Small matter actually. I considered quitting my job and just following the tour until it ended. Yet playing it showed exactly where John Crist's limitations lie. He's a spectacular guitar player in so many ways. Clapton was the man to do this, and do it well. Hendrix' place in the pantheon is ensured and perhaps that and a tribute to Jimi was indeed the intent.
